Adventures on Hwy 1

This weekend was full of fun- probably the most fun I've had in a while that wasn't on two wheels.

Saturday I drove up to Sacramento to see an imax movie with friends, and spent some time walking around downtown Sac. The drive wasn't too bad, and traffic was light.

Saturday night saw me drinking way too much at a local pub... the interesting thing about the place- it's the only place in the state of California I've found where you can smoke. The have an interesting workaround in which Altoids cans replace ashtrays. It's just understood that if a "situation" arises, such as an officer of the law walking in, you put your cig in the can, close it, and put it in your pocket. Pretty clever, huh??

...Moving on to Sunday. Ah yes. I slept my hangover off and got a late start headed west to the coast. I drove across the San Mateo bridge and went to Half Moon Bay. A beautiful place. If it weren't so damned expensive, I'd live there in a heartbeat. I snapped this update's cover shot at Francis Beach there on the way back.

After a short walk along the beach, I hopped back in the car and headed on down Highway 1 to Santa Cruz. There were some absolutely wonderful pulloffs and overlooks along the highway- here's a shot I snapped at one of them.

greenoverlook

I still enjoy coming across all the flora and fauna that are so foriegn to me... Hopefully on Wednesday, I'll make a jaunt North on the 1 to get some redwood pics.

coastline

I finally settled in for a bit at a very special place called Pebble Beach. It's quite strange how the beach goes from clean sand to black pebbles so quickly... the coolest thing- I was there as the tide came in, and as the waves rolled back into the ocean, it would drag all the little pebbles back over one another. It sounded like thousands of rattlesnakes at once, and I don't even think you could have a conversation over it during the rising tide.

Another neat sound was the HUGE breakers smashing against the boulders. The closest sound that comes to mind would be thunder.

spray

There were all kinds of neat little creatures living in the tide pools. I had the opportunity to photograph some baby crabs and starfish. I'm not sure why, but the crabs that were out of the water were not very happy with my presence. They would chatter their little mandibles and make a hideous sound at me to scare me away. Although they were quite small and totally harmless, I decided not to play with them too much, as there have evidently been some major problems with people disturbing them.

mrcrab

It was an awesome day, and my new memory card afforded me plenty of storage, but unfortunately I killed both of my batteries before I had a chance to get any really good sunset shots. Hopefully on Wednesday night, I'll be able to get some good ones.

Till then......

Back in Cali. Again.

Haven't done much yet besides work, although I'm looking forward to getting out and snapping a few good shots this weekend. Currently enjoying a Negra Modelo in the hotel room. I think it's my fifth.

This week at home:

Monday night acoustic blues rocked much ass. I played in 4 sets with a whole bunch of different people, including the massive hippie jam at the end. Glad some of you came out, I hope y'all enjoyed as much as I did.

Did a lot of riding on the DR350 and the Gixxer. They're both extremely entertaining in two completely different ways. Looking forward to getting my new tires on the DR once I get home, and hitting up the Gap one day. Hopefully the law enforcement won't be as ridiculous as it is this weekend.

Had to move most of my bikes this week, since Firefighter Jake's moving, I'm out of my bike storage. I went ahead and took a few of the dirtbikes to work.

dirtbikes

The RM250 is staying at the house for the moment, though. Sometimes I like to sit on her and make two-stroke noises.

rm250

Also sleeping over at the house for a little while will be the Superhawk. I just really got my first chance to rip all the broken plastic off of her and assess the damage.... I've still got a lot of work to do- more to follow.

superhawk

I'm really looking forward to coming home next weekend, even if I'm only home for a few days. I haven't been able to make it up to the Gap in while, and I'm seriously starting to miss the sound of things scraping on pavement at speed.

This weekend should be entertaining, as I'm planning on being a gypsy nomad drifter again.... and it all starts in the morning.

Hellos to xhi.

Now for another beer...

A full weekend

Friday night after work, I got the turn signal situation all sorted out on the DR350. It took a couple of hours of wiring, but I definitely saved some money by using the stock turn signals off of Firefighter Jake's SV650. And of course after I got them all mounted and wired up, I had to wheelie- test them.... :D They actually look good and stock- I'll try to take some pics this afternoon and get them up for ya.

Later that evening I went to a party thrown by some undground secret fraternity from Maryville College. I wasn't expecting much, but it actually turned out to be quite the party. Probably 300-400 people in a field out in the middle of the woods, with a bunch of kegs, and 150 lbs of BBQ'd pork. Now that's a party, folks. The bonfire was huge, and somehow a billiards table ended up in it at some point. They had hired a DJ, and karaoke was the choice form of entertainment for most of the night. Here's Matt, Katie, Holly, and John.

The other Katie and I. (seriously)

We finally got Matt drunk enough to sing some karoke, and he busted out one of the most amazing Axl Rose impressions I've ever witnessed. It's like the channels Axl's spirit. But he was pissed that no one had a bandana or avaitor glasses for him to wear. He dances like a drunken fool while Alison gets her groove on.

alison&matt

The party was rockin, but I had to bounce when the drunk rednecks started singing "Dixieland Delight" for about the 5th time...

Saturday I spent some more time on the "new to me" bike, just trying to get the kinks ironed out... ordered a set of Avon Distanzias to get a little more grip on the pavement- those knobbies are hell when you're trying to corner it hard. Then that night, I rested. Got tore down alone at the house on the Maker's Mark and Coke.

Sunday, I woke up, and it was raining. I went back to sleep.

Then I woke up again, and it wasn't raining, so I went for another ride for 2 or 3 hours. I blasted some mountain backroads, the type that are way too bumpy and debris-ridden to be even considered safe on a sportbike. It felt great to just rip the throttle open, and not have to worry about what's in the road- I really think I'm gonna love this dual-sport thing.

More info on the new bike, and pics soon. I'm too busy riding it right now... :)

A Weekend in NorCal

Yeah, I know it's Thursday- and I've been busy since I got home. Sorry. This one will be picture-intensive...

I wrapped up work on Friday afternoon and headed up to San Rafael to spend the weekend with some friends. Promptly got screwed over by MapQuest and ended up headed the wrong way on the 101 in rush hour. It's way too long a story to post here.

I woke up early on Saturday and headed out to Antioch to go for a hike with a friend. We went up to Black Diamond Mines and bounced around the thousands of acres of trails. The scenery was awesome.
blackdiamondhills

It just happened to be descendent day at the park, so there were all kinds of people whose grandparents and whatnots lived and died in the mines. This shot shows (way off in the distance) a cemetary where many of the miners who died in accidents were buried.

cemetaryhill

We hiked another couple of miles on up the hill for an excellent view of Mt. Diablo.

diablo

Here's another good shot looking the other way, towards Antioch. That's the delta area off in the distance.

antioch

I had a great time snake hunting- found about a 6 foot gopher snake sunning off the trail, and then came across this gorgeous juvenile ringneck- but check out his battle scar- I reckon it came from a bird or some such. He was maybe a foot long or so, and very slender- most likely born last fall.

ringneck

I headed back up to the North Bay (Marin County) and we got the party started. I was kinda surprised that my one friend from high school gathered 30 or so people to come to a party for *me*, and it wasn't even my birthday... Sage the dog had a lot of fun playing with Chloe- they were perfect little playmates.

chloe&sage

We had some wicked hippie jam sessions and drum circles, and actually managed to make it through the night without singing Kumbaya. They were some serious hippie/rasta folk, complete with the bus in the front yard. As the night pressed on, they decided to do their fire-dance routine in the front yard. Here's a picture I snapped of Chotzi before the cops came.

firedancing

Got to share some music with Krickie, who was a really talented singer/songwriter. I'm trying to talk her into taking a trip out here sometime so she can play in Knox-Vegas for us.

I had a bunch of fun, and met a whole bunch of really cool people. The cops finally shut the party down on their third visit, but the keg was empty at that point any damn way. Hope everyone else is having a good time enjoying this fantastic spring weather- I picked up another bike this week, and I'm really looking forward to getting some seat time on it. Til next time....

I'm dying to post a big, fun update, and I've got lots of great pictures... but I'm just too damn tired right now. Had a great night out with a couple of friends, and need to get to sleep now. More tomorrow.... I mean today.

Tri-Valley area, CA

Got all settled in last night, went in and worked in the office today. After work, I drove on out to Lake Del Valle and took some photos. Oddly enough, the first thing I noticed upon getting out of the car was how CLEAN it smelled. No explanation, just the smell of trees and grass and happiness, without the fishy smell our lakes in Tennessee often have when it's warm.

tree

The park was nearly empty, and I was able to enjoy my solitude for a bit, and observe the wildlife. I saw one Bald Eagle (I'm pretty sure), but he never came close enough for me to get any good pics. I did, however, see a couple of these other LARGE birds.

soaring

I don't think they were Condor, as they were circling above the water as well as land, and quite large and brown-ish in color. They were obviously quite leery of me, and wouldn't come close until I sat underneath a tree near a meadow for a few minutes... couldn't pull off a decent shot then, though, because of all the cover.

Once they moved in a little bit, though, I saw that their wingspan was much bigger than anything I normally see at home- the larger ones were 3-4 feet easily, and they sounded like pterodactyls swooping about the trees. Large enough that they were nearly hovering in the drafts above me. They didn't appear to make any vocal-type sound, and there were 6-8 more gliding along some other clearings on up the mountain. If anyone has any ideas as to what they might be, please leave a comment- I'm definitely no Audubon.

After I left the lake, I headed on up Mines Rd. It started off pretty tame, but soon it got quite twisty. The grade steepened, and the curves got more serious. Some of it was positively Gap-like, and I was giving the trusty blue rental Neon all she could take.

gaplike

I made it 10 miles or so up the road before it went down to one lane and got pretty bumpy, so I pulled off at an overlook and grabbed today's cover shot.

The scenery was great today, and the weather was about as nice as it gets for a slightly overcast spring day. If it doesn't rain tomorrow (like it's supposed to), I'm gonna head up north and find some stuff worth shooting for ya. Now I'm off to bed....

In which I became one with my surroundings

The lawnmower on the right was afire on the side of the road in Friendsville- and you guys who ride 116 think things get weird out there... The smell of the rubber and oil burning was ultra pleasant- nearly enough to drown out the combination "cow manure/dead fish in the lake" smell that's indigenous to that area.

I rode on out through the countryside, and found some sweet scenery- love the way these hills roll. You can click to make them bigger.
rolling

I totally bonded with some cattle today (in a completely non-sexual way, before the comments start rolling in). You can't tell from their expressions, but you're looking at first-hand evidence of my amazingly persuasive expertise with bovine mammalia- about 10 minutes each of, "Heeeere momma cow, heeeere baby cow... that's a gooood little cow, come take a picture for tjaaaay"....

.... And just when I thought my strange adventures with semi-domesticated animals were done for the day, I come home to this:
bunnies
No explanation available. You know just as much about it as I do now... Two pet bunnies making love in the street in front of my house.

I snapped a sweet shot of a Tulip Poplar blossom on my tree:

... And then it was time to start packing for my trip to Cali tomorrow. Wicked sunset this evening.

Quite a strange day, all in all. 'Specially with the whole bunny thing. More in a day or two from the Bay Area.
